Naomi (na-omi). [Heb. Naomi, “my pleasantness.”] The wife of Elimelech and mother of 2 sons. During a severe famine her family moved from Bethlehem to Moab, where her sons married and where later her husband and sons died. After their death naomi returned to Bethlehem, taking Ruth, one of her Moabite daughters-in-law, with her. It was through Ruth, who came to fame, that Naomi's name has found a place in the Biblical narrative (Ruth 1-4).
