Achan, or Achar. [Heb. Akan, meaning uncertain, and Akar, "troubler."] A Judahite who, against the explicit command of God that all of Jericho was to be devoted to God, appropriated to himself a Babylonian garment, a piece of gold, and a quantity of silver from the spoil of the city. His act brought a curse upon the whole nation and caused the defeat of the Israelites at Ai.
